When his best friend, Stiles, convinces him to go into the woods one night to join a police search for a dead body, Scott encounters a creature in the darkness. Narrowly escaping an attack with a vicious bite in his side, the next day brings strange surprises for Scott at school and his life will never be the same.
Summer Premiere[edit]
The students of Beacon Hills High return from their summer break as Scott McCall (Tyler Posey) and Allison Argent (Crystal Reed) remain parted while Scott's best friend Stiles Stilinski (Dylan O'Brien) and Lydia Martin (Holland Roden) get involved in detective work. Lydia also deals with her separation from Jackson Whittemore (Colton Haynes), who has moved to London. Meanwhile, Derek Hale (Tyler Hoechlin), Isaac Lahey (Daniel Sharman), and Peter Hale (Ian Bohen) search for the Alpha Pack that has come to Beacon Hills and kidnapped both Boyd (Sinqua Walls) and Erica (Gage Golightly), during which Isaac gets captured himself but manages to escape by the help of an unknown girl (Meagan Tandy). After rescuing Isaac from the hospital, Derek tells Scott and Stiles about the Alpha Pack and its members Kali, (Felisha Terrell), Ennis (Brian Patrick Wade), and the Twins Aiden and Ethan (Charlie Carver and Max Carver), along with the leader, Deucalion (Gideon Emery). The girl who saved Isaac is captured by the Alpha Pack and wounded. Upon meeting the leader, Deucalion, she mentions Scott and the fact that she knows he is a "threat" to Deucalion. After it is revealed that Deucalion plans to have Derek kill Scott in order to eliminate the threat, the girl is killed by a slash on her throat.
Firstly, Peter Hale gets a glimpse of Erica and Boyd from Isaac's memory. Then, with the help of Scott's boss and mentor Alan Deaton (Seth Gilliam), Isaac is able to recall that Boyd and Erica are being held in an abandoned bank, however Erica has already been killed. After Derek and Scott find Boyd, they are trapped by the Alpha Pack and are confronted by an enraged Boyd and another werewolf named Cora Hale (Adelaide Kane), who is Derek's younger sister. Boyd and Cora are violent and unstable, as they haven't been exposed to a full moon for months, which has allowed their power "build up". After almost being killed, both Derek and Scott are saved by Allison, who has also been investigating the Alpha Pack. Derek forces Scott to reveal to Allison that her mother tried to kill him, which ultimately resulted in her death. As Allison comes to terms with this, Derek and Scott go after Boyd and Cora, who have escaped and are on a rampage. Despite getting help from Isaac and Allison, they are forced to turn to Allison's father, Chris Argent (J. R. Bourne) for help. They manage to capture Boyd and Cora, while saving the life of new Beacon Hills teacher Jennifer Blake (Haley Webb), who Derek has begun to have feelings for. Meanwhile, Lydia discovers a dead body and Stiles discovers that the person owned a purity ring. He puts the pieces together and discovers that someone is killing virgins, one of which was his childhood friend Heather (Caitlin Custer), for an unknown sacrifice.
After many more sacrificial deaths occur, including the death of chemistry teacher Adrian Harris (Adam Fristoe), Lydia, Stiles, and Deaton team up to investigate the murders and discover that the killer is actually a dark form of a druid known as a "Darach". Meanwhile, Deucalion, Kali, and Ennis attack Derek at his home. Deucalion reveals that when he lost his eye sight he killed everyone in his pack, absorbing their powers. Deucalion offers Derek a spot in the Alpha Pack, however he must kill everyone in his own pack or Deucalion will kill him. Later, Scott, Derek, Boyd, Cora, and Isaac seek vengeance against Deucalion and the Alpha Pack for the death of Erica and for their recent attack on Derek. Ennis and Derek are wounded, however, Scott and the others believe they are dead. While Derek recovers with the help of Jennifer, Deucalion kills Ennis but blames the death on Derek, resulting in the Alpha Pack targeting him. After learning that Derek is alive, Scott gets a phone call from Deaton, who reveals that he is about to be taken by the Darach. Scott searches for and finds him, but is unable to save him as he is surrounded by mountain ash. Attempting to break the ash barrier, Scott's eyes turn red for a split second. Stiles' dad Sheriff Stilinski (Linden Ashby) arrives and is able to save Deaton. While Stilinski leaves for backup, Deaton tells Scott about his eyes turning red and that he is actually a true alpha, a werewolf who becomes an Alpha through strength of character and willpower, without having to kill for it. According to Deaton, this is an extremely rare occurrence. Scott realizes that Deucalion is aware of this and that he actually wants Scott for his pack, not Derek. Meanwhile, Derek, Isaac, and Boyd prepare for Kali and the Twins, who are coming to avenge Ennis' death. However, they bring Jennifer as bait and make Derek fight Kali alone. During the battle, Kali forces Derek to fatally wound Boyd and absorb his power, giving him an ultimatum to either join the Alpha Pack or be killed. Derek, Isaac, Jennifer, Stiles, Cora, and Lydia watch as Boyd dies from his wounds.
With the Darach killing more people and the threat of Deucalion's Alpha Pack, Scott and Stiles attempt to find answers. It is revealed that Gerard Argent (Michael Hogan) is still alive, who tells Scott that Deucalion formed the Alpha Pack after Gerard blinded him and that all the Alpha werewolves had emissaries, or present-day druids. It is also revealed that Deucalion forced all the members of his pack to kill everyone from their own packs, including their emissaries. Meanwhile, Stiles and Cora learn from Peter that Derek was once like Scott and had fallen in love with a girl named Paige (Madison McLaughlin) when he was teenager. Peter asked Ennis to "turn" her so that Derek could truly be with her. However, Paige's body rejected the bite and Derek was forced to kill her to relieve her suffering. This resulted in Derek's eyes turning blue, indicating he had taken an innocent life. Scott goes to Lydia in order to find out who the Darach is, as it is evident she has the uncanny ability to sense when someone is being killed as well as to find the body afterwards. Allison and Isaac, who are growing attracted to each other, discover that Allison's dad Chris has also been investigating the Darach and has discovered that the out the Darach has killed "virgins", "warriors", "healers", and "philosophers", while saving "guardians" for last. The Darach is revealed to be none other than Jennifer Blake, who then kidnaps Lydia. Jennifer reveals to Lydia that she is a banshee, "The Wailing Woman", explaining why she is able to find dead bodies and how she was controlled by Peter in season 2. Jennifer tries to kill her, but is stopped by Scott and Sheriff Stilinski. The Darach then kidnaps Sheriff Stilinski in front of Stiles. After discovering the Darach's identity, Derek, Stiles, and Scott manage to capture her, but are unable to kill her as she has poisoned Cora and is the only one who knows how to save her. Meanwhile, the hospital is being evacuated due to a massive storm. Scott, Stiles, Derek and Peter are trapped at the hospital by the Alphas, who also want Jennifer dead. While Scott's mom List of Teen Wolf characters#Melissa (Melissa Ponzio) is held captive by Deucalion, it is revealed that Jennifer was once Kali's emissary, who Kali evidently failed to kill. Splitting up, Derek and Jennifer find themselves stuck in an elevator, as Deucalion forced Melissa to cut the power to the hospital. Deucalion sets her free as a "sequester of good will". Jennifer reveals that she is committing the murders in order to regain power and kill the Alpha werewolves for what they did to her and the other members of the previous packs. With the help of Allison, Chris, and Isaac they manage to force the Alpha werewolves to retreat while saving themselves. However, Jennifer knocks out Derek and kidnaps Melissa. Feeling hopeless, Scott joins Deucalion's Alpha Pack to find Jennifer and his mother, despite protests from Stiles. Stiles realizes that "guardians" means parents, hence why Jennifer has kidnapped Stiles' dad and Scott's mom.
After escaping from the hospital, Stiles stays behind to clear things up with the police and meets an FBI agent (Matthew Del Negro), who he seems to know. Chris, Allison, Isaac, and Derek meet up, planning their next move. Derek and Isaac take Cora back to their loft, along with Peter. Isaac lashes out at Derek for not doing anything and accuses him of wanting power over family, which results in him going to join the others. While searching for Jennifer, Chris realizes that he has been named as the last guardian and sacrifice, so he surrenders himself to Jennifer in order to protect his daughter. As Stiles, Allison, and Isaac try to find out where the three parents are being held captive, Stiles discovers that Lydia's drawing of a tree is actually a root cellar, which is where the parents are being kept. Meanwhile, Derek and Peter try to find a way to save Cora. Peter suggests an old myth where an Alpha werewolf saves a Beta from death by sacrificing his/her own powers as an Alpha werewolf. Choosing family over power, Derek heals Cora and loses his status as an Alpha. Deucalion and his Alpha Pack, along with Scott, chase down Miss Morrell (Bianca Lawson), Beacon Hills High's guidance councillor, who is also Deucalion's emissary. After managing to capture her, she reveals that the she was the one who sent the mysterious girl from the beginning of the season to save Isaac and that her name is Braeden. Scott tries to convince her to tell them where Jennifer is, but she does not know. Deaton approaches Stiles with a way to find out where their parents are. This involves having Scott, Stiles, and Allison temporarily die in order to discover the location of the root cellar. However, Deaton warns them they will live with "darkness around their hearts" for the rest of their lives. Deaton also mentions that the process will attract other supernatural beings to Beacon Hills, ones that they have yet to discover. As Scott, Allison, and Stiles enter bathtubs filled with ice, Stiles reveals to Scott that his father is in town, revealing that the FBI agent from the hospital is actually Scott's father. As they are pushed under the ice water, they each discover they have all been to the location of the cellar before and that their interactions weren't as coincidental as they originally thought. After they are revived, they begin to plan their next move.
With Lydia's and Ethan's (one of the Twins) help, Derek and Cora go on the run from Kali. Aiden (the other Twin) also decides to join Lydia's side. However they are forced to face Jennifer at Derek's loft. Jennifer kills Kali and wounds the Twins, and also sends a message to Derek using Lydia. Jennifer manages to force Derek to help her kill Deucalion, while Cora and Lydia take the Twins to Deaton to be healed. Deucalion and Scott team up and send Jennifer a message on where to meet. Allison and Isaac find out where their parents are and free them, only for a storm to cause the ground to sink in, trapping them. Stiles accidentally crashes his car and becomes unconscious. Jennifer and Derek arrive to face Deucalion and Scott. Deucalion reveals a glimpse of his true form and manages to single-handedly take them both down. When Deucalion tries to force Scott to kill Jennifer, he refuses. The lunar eclipse suddenly happens, stripping everyone but Jennifer of their powers. Taking her chance, Jennifer attempts to kill Deucalion, but stops and gives him back his sight so he can see what her true form is and what his actions have done to her. While she is distracted, Derek attacks her and reveals that her power to give Deucalion his sight back has weakened her. Just as the eclipse ends, Jennifer creates a barrier of mountain ash around her. Scott attempts to break the barrier and manages to turn into a true Alpha werewolf, eventually destroying the barrier. Not wanting to kill her, Deucalion seemingly does it himself, slashing her throat. Meanwhile, Stiles arrives in time to save everyone as the cellar collapses.
In the aftermath, Scott and Derek allow Deucalion to leave, giving him the chance to redeem himself after everything that has happened. Derek and Cora leave Beacon Hills for another unknown location. Chris and Allison decide to go back to their lives as werewolf hunters and renew their code. Aiden and Lydia are dating and Ethan and Danny are dating. Scott's father tries to renew his relationship with him, but to no avail. Both Scott and Stiles return to their original lives, controlling the darkness within them as they look upon their friends.
Jennifer, who is shown to still be alive but mortally wounded, struggles to reach the Nematon to regain her powers. However, she is stopped by Peter, who slashes her throat and claims he has "always been the Alpha."
Victoria Argent (Eaddy Mays), Coach Bobby Finstock (Orny Adams), Danny Mahealani (Keahu Kahuanui) and Young Peter Hale (Michael Fjordbak) also appeared during the summer season.
Mr. Lahey (John Wesley Shipp) was featured only through a voice over.
